zongzi : pronounced "duong" in my dialect is neatly packaged sticky rice with different types of pork, peanuts, egg and baby shrimp inside.
every may my mom makes zongzi. it's a chinese tradition that she carries on so well. it's a labor intensive process. the eggs are prepared a month in advance and the cleaning of the dried banana leafs requires daily washing weeks before you can manipulate them. the 60 lbs of rice is washed and put in a the biggest pot we have for easy access... then the rest of the yummy ingredients are cut into bite size pieces and separated into small neat bowls.
my mom makes the most perfect zongzi :) they are carefully put together into the perfect twisted triangle shape ... and tied with string all exactly the same.
hundreds of handmade zongzi later ... they are slow cooke over the stove for 6 hours and divided up to give to relatives.
